THE DEEP DIVE

What Cybersecurity Marketers Need to Know from RSAC 2025

RSA Conference (RSAC) 2025, held April 28 - May 1 at San Francisco's Moscone Center, brought together over 45,000 cybersecurity professionals, innovators, and industry leaders under the theme, "Many Voices. One Community." For cybersecurity marketers, RSAC remains a goldmine of insights, trends, and strategies that can directly influence their marketing initiatives and content planning.

While I did not personally attend RSAC this year, I’ve been closely following accounts from other attendees. Today, I’ll break down key themes emerging from the conference and discuss what marketers should focus on moving forward.

AI Takes Center Stage

Shocking exactly no one, Artificial Intelligence dominated the conversation at RSAC 2025, marking a pivotal shift in how the industry addresses cyber threats. Notably, Cisco introduced its groundbreaking Foundation AI Security Model—an open-source, 8-billion-parameter AI model designed to empower organizations to proactively combat cyber threats.

Here Come the Agents

The rise of "agentic AI" also generated considerable buzz. If you're not yet familiar with this trending term, agentic AI systems independently perform complex tasks, promising enhanced threat detection and rapid automated responses that redefine cybersecurity standards.

However, we all need to set our BS meters to their highest setting regarding agentic AI over the coming weeks and months. There are suddenly bold promises everywhere, but many claims are currently more marketing hype than reality. My favorite quip this week came from the Cybersecurity Today podcast (Apple Podcasts | Spotify): “No, your Python script is not an agentic AI.”

For marketers, though, this evolution presents a compelling storytelling opportunity. Companies genuinely incorporating AI—agentic or otherwise—into their solutions should focus marketing efforts on demystifying AI, clearly highlighting tangible benefits, and showcasing these advancements through engaging, real-world use cases.

It’s Not All Great News

For all the promise AI brings as a force for good, there's also some genuinely concerning activity in this space. Numerous malicious AI coding tools are already in circulation, and discussions at RSAC highlighted just how easily attackers can bypass the guardrails set within mainstream AI solutions. The next few years will likely see a significant increase in AI-related attack vectors as these tools proliferate and become more user-friendly.

This emerging threat landscape underscores why marketers must deepen their fundamental understanding of AI and sharpen their messaging around its benefits and risks.

Embracing Community: Collaboration as a Key to Success

The theme of RSAC 2025, “Many Voices. One Community,” underscored the industry's collective effort to address cyber threats. This emphasis on collaboration resonates strongly in today's cybersecurity marketplace, where trust, authenticity, and community engagement heavily influence purchasing decisions.

Marketers can harness this narrative by showcasing collaborative projects, community initiatives, or partnerships.Engaging openly with the cybersecurity community not only bolsters credibility but also positions brands as vital contributors to shared security goals.

Political Dynamics and Cybersecurity

At RSAC 2025, discussions extended beyond technological advancements to address significant political shifts impacting the cybersecurity sector. Notably, the Trump administration's proposed $491 million reduction to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) budget has raised concerns about the nation's cyber defense capabilities.

Adding to the unease is the administration's recent actions against former CISA Director Chris Krebs, who moderated a panel at RSAC. An executive order revoked Krebs' security clearance and initiated a federal investigation into his tenure, citing allegations of censorship and misuse of authority. These moves have been perceived by many in the cybersecurity community as politically motivated retribution, particularly given Krebs' public affirmation of the 2020 election's integrity.

The response from the cybersecurity sector has been mixed at best. While some industry leaders and organizations, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have publicly condemned the actions and expressed support for Krebs, others have remained silent, possibly due to concerns about political repercussions.

For cybersecurity marketers, these developments underscore the importance of transparent communication and the need to address clients' concerns about the stability and reliability of federal cybersecurity initiatives. Positioning your products and services as essential components in a robust cybersecurity strategy can help reassure stakeholders during these uncertain times.

Actionable Insights for Marketers

To leverage these themes effectively, cybersecurity marketers should consider the following actionable steps:

  • AI Integration: Clearly articulate AI-driven capabilities in your product storytelling, ensuring claims are substantiated and transparent. Create engaging educational content around AI to dispel misconceptions and showcase practical, measurable impacts.

  • Community Engagement: Actively participate in cybersecurity forums, webinars, and discussions. Highlight collaborative successes to position your brand as a community advocate.

  • Proactive Communication: Regularly monitor policy changes and communicate transparently how your solutions align with evolving compliance requirements and industry standards.

Final Thoughts

RSAC is a gigantic conference. Neatly summarizing it with just a few takeaways feels inadequate at best. However, by focusing on these critical themes—AI innovation, community collaboration, and evolving political landscapes—marketers can stay informed, agile, and prepared to effectively communicate value and build trust in an increasingly complex cybersecurity world.

Stay sharp,
